A Social and Psychological Approach to Conflict Management in Jammu and Kashmir
People of the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) region practiced Hinduism, Buddhism and Zoroastrianism at the time when Islam entered the Kashmir Valley. One aspect that remained constant in Kashmir was that in spite of the arrival of foreign Sufi Saints such as Mir Sayed Ali Hamadani, Mir Mohammad, Sayed Jaamaluddin Bukhari and Sayed Ismail Shami from Westand Central Asia, they did not disrespect the enshrined values of Kashmiri culture and local religious faith of the people; rather they incorporated values of mystique culture of Kashmir and helped in development of indigenous Sufi order, unique to Kashmir.
Bleeding From Within
The country’s internal security environment, which suffered steady deterioration during UPA’s earlier five-year rule, continues to remain a cause of serious concern. Now that the government is no more fettered by pulls and pressures of coalition partners, which its apologists claimed prevented it from decisive actions in the past, it is regrettable that the situation is showing no signs of abatement.

Kokarnag in the southernmost part of South Kashmir, is a sleepy little township. It once was the bastion of militancy due to the presence of the lofty Pir Panjal range in whose shadow it lies and the forested tracts of the lower hills; the terrain was tailor made for militancy. Through the first ten years of the millennium one of the Indian Army’s famous units, 36 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) (Garhwal Rifles), cleaned the area out leaving few signs of militancy behind. It earned as many four COAS Unit Citations and many more awards for this feat.
