Five CUHK students get up to 59 months’ jail over riots: China Daily

The District Court on Tuesday sentenced five Chinese University of Hong Kong students to up to four years and 11 months in prison for their roles in the rioting that took place at the university’s campus in 2019. The five defendants, aged between 20 and 23, were arrested for participating in the violent clashes with the police force on a bridge at the CUHK on Nov 11, when the city was rocked by months-long social unrest. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), China’s top cyberspace regulator, held a working meeting on Monday on the “Clear and Bright” campaign and stressed certain accounts as major targets, including the accounts of banned users and “zombie followers” of celebrities. Owners of illegal accounts that were shut down according to the law and platform rules are not allowed to open new accounts with the same or similar names. The owner should be banned from registering for a new account for a period based on the severity of the violations, according to the meeting of the CAC. Click here to read…

China’s property and construction sectors contracted in the third quarter for the first time since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, hurt by a slump in real estate as the China Evergrande Group debt crisis and the effects of Beijing’s tougher property market regulation spread to other parts of the economy. Output in the real estate and construction industries shrank 1.6 per cent and 1.8 per cent respectively in the third quarter of 2021, according to a supplemental report on China’s gross domestic product released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Tuesday. Canton Fair participants said global inflation was the biggest risk for their businesses as they attended the biannual trade event in person for the first time in three exhibitions.

The five-day fair – the largest of its kind in China – kicked off last Friday in Guangzhou, but many Chinese exhibitors said they were disappointed at the lack of foreign buyers, with some packing up and leaving early on the last day of the fair on Tuesday. Many exporters taking part in the exhibition, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), said they had not signed up or approached new foreign buyers during the event, while domestic buyers showed little interest in placing orders.
