A Chinese envoy on Tuesday told the Security Council that foreign military intervention does nothing to help solve any problem. “The way the situation in Afghanistan has transpired recently is proof that foreign military intervention and the imposition of a ‘democratic transformation’ program does nothing to help solve any problem. It only creates more problems and failure is the inevitable outcome,” Dai Bing, charge d’affaires of China’s permanent mission to the UN, said at the Security Council Briefing on the Maintenance of International Peace and Security.

Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Carrie Lam Tuesday said district councilors who refuse to attend the oath-taking ceremony will be disqualified. At a press briefing ahead of the Executive Council meeting, Lam said that as of Saturday, there were 479 members in the sixth-term District Council, in which 260 of them resigned and eight were disqualified. The remaining 211 members have to take oaths.

The Alataw Pass and Horgos Port, major rail ports in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, handled more than 8,000 China-Europe freight train trips in the first eight months of 2021, said local railway authorities. Alataw Pass reported a 28.4-percent growth of the trips during the period, while the other port registered a nearly 40-percent increase of China-Europe freight train trips compared to the prior year. During the period, the trains transported about 3.1 million tonnes of cargo through the Alataw Pass, up by 47.9 percent. Over 6 million tonnes of cargo were transported via the Horgos Port, up by 50.9 percent, year on year.

China on Monday started holding an international peacekeeping drill code-named “Shared Destiny-2021.” It is the first time the Chinese military has organized such a multi-national live drill on peacekeeping, with the participation of troops from countries including China, Mongolia, Pakistan and Thailand. 3,627 persons test positive for COVID-19 – Daily FT

The country’s COVID-19 detections rose to 447,757 with the detections of 3,627 COVID-19 positive persons yesterday. According to the Health Promotion Bureau, 14,009 PCR tests were carried out yesterday and the detections include 3,619 persons from the New Year cluster and eight overseas arrivals On Wednesday, 13,336 PCR tests and 4,345 rapid antigen tests were carried out and 3,828 COVID-19 patients were detected. Out of the detections, 3,826 were from the New Year cluster and two were from the Prisons cluster. The Epidemiology Unit states that 341,044 patients are linked to the New Year cluster and 8,164 patients are linked to the Prisons cluster. The country’s imported cases include 6,836 Sri Lankans and 328 foreigners.

Panama-flagged cargo ship refloated earlier than expected – Raajje

The Panamanian cargo boat that ran aground on to the reefs on the west side of K. Rasfari, has been refloated. The Panamanian boat ‘Navios Amaryllis’ crashed into the reefs of Rasfari on August 19 and the work of dredging the boat commenced that very day. MNDF affirmed that the dredging work had been completed by Sunday afternoon, with the support of Maldives Coast Guard and other relevant bodies.

9,208 persons test positive for COVID-19 over the weekend – Daily FT

Health officials stated that 4,612 persons tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday, raising the weekend detections to 9,208. The patients detected yesterday are from the New Year cluster. The Health Promotion Bureau states that 13,446 PCR tests were carried out yesterday. On Saturday, 16,073 PCR tests and 4,621 rapid antigen tests were carried out. The patients detected on Saturday include 4,576 persons from the New Year cluster, 14 Sri Lankan overseas returnees, and six persons from the Prisons cluster. A hotline was established between Indian Army in Kongra La, North Sikkim and PLA at Khamba Dzong in Tibetan Autonomous Region. The event coincided with the PLA Day on 01 Aug 2021.

Joint press release of the 12th round of India-China corps commander level meeting.

The 12th round of India-China Corps Commander Level Meeting was held at the Chushul-Moldo border meeting point on the Indian side. This round of meeting was held following the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of India and People’s Republic of China on 14th July in Dushanbe and the 22nd meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) held on 25th June.

The two sides had a candid and in-depth exchange of views on resolution of remaining areas related to disengagement along the Line of Actual Control in the Western Sector of India-China border areas. The two sides noted that this round of meeting was constructive, which further enhanced mutual understanding. They agreed to resolve these remaining issues in an expeditious manner in accordance with the existing agreements and protocols and maintain the momentum of dialogue and negotiations.

Eastern Fleet Ships on overseas operational deployment.

In pursuit of India’s ‘Act East’ policy and to enhance military cooperation with friendly countries, a Task Force of Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet is scheduled to proceed on an Overseas Deployment to South East Asia, the South China Sea and Western Pacific from early Aug 2021 for over two months. The deployment of the Indian Navy ships seeks to underscore the operational reach, peaceful presence and solidarity with friendly countries towards ensuring good order in the maritime domain and to strengthen existing bonds between India and countries of the Indo Pacific.

During the deployment in the Indo Pacific, the ships are scheduled to participate in bilateral exercises with Vietnamese Peoples’ Navy, Republic of Philippines Navy, Republic of Singapore Navy (SIMBEX), Indonesian Navy (Samudra Shakti) and Royal Australian Navy (AUS-INDEX). Further, they would also participate in multilateral exercise MALABAR-21 alongside the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force, Royal Australian Navy and the United States Navy in Western Pacific.

Commencement of Sea trials of indigenous aircraft carrier.

The Indigenous Aircraft Carrier is 262 m long, 62 m at the widest part and height of 59 m including the superstructure. There are 14 decks in all, including five in the superstructure. The ship has over 2,300 compartments, designed for a crew of around 1700 people, including specialised cabins to accommodate women officers. The ship has been designed with a very high degree of automation for machinery operation, ship navigation and survivability, ‘Vikrant’ has a top speed of around 28 knots and cruising speed of 18 knots with an endurance of about 7,500 nautical miles. The ship can accommodate an assortment of fixed wing and rotary aircraft. Most of the ship construction activities have been completed and the ship has entered the trials phase.

BRO constructs highest motorable road in the world in Eastern Ladakh.

Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has constructed and black-topped the highest motorable road in the world at 19,300 ft at Umlingla Pass in Eastern Ladakh, creating a record in high-altitude road construction. It has constructed a 52-km long tarmac road through Umlingla Pass, bettering the previous record of a road in Bolivia connecting to its volcano Uturuncu at 18,953 ft. The road now connects the important towns in Chumar sector of Eastern Ladakh. It will prove to be a boon to the local population as it offers an alternate direct route connecting Chisumle and Demchok from Leh. It will enhance the socio-economic condition and promote tourism in Ladakh. The road has been constructed at an altitude higher than the Mt Everest Base Camps as the South Base Camp in Nepal is at an altitude of 17,598 ft, while North Base Camp in Tibet is at 16,900 ft. The road has been constructed much above the altitude of Siachen Glacier which is at 17,700 ft. The Khardung La Pass in Leh is at an altitude of 17,582 ft.

Indo – Russia joint training Exercise INDRA 2021.

The Indo – Russia joint training Exercise INDRA 2021 commenced at Prudboy Ranges, Volgograd on 04 Aug 2021 with an impressive opening ceremony that saw the unfurling of the National Flags of both countries. Exercise INDRA 2021 will enhance interoperability between the Indian and Russian Armies. The closing ceremony was held on 12 Aug 2021. The aim of the exercise was to acquaint each other with operational planning, procedures, combat drills and conducting of joint operations against international terrorist groups. Both the contingents, comprising of 250 soldiers from each side displayed great enthusiasm and professionalism while practicing joint drills during the conduct of the exercise.

Disengagement at PP 17A.

The twelfth round of talks between the Corps Commanders of India and China were held on 31 July 2021 at Chushul Moldo Meeting Point in Eastern Ladakh. As an outcome of the meeting, both sides agreed on disengagement in the area of Gogra. The troops in this area have been in a face-off situation since May last year. As per the agreement, both sides have ceased forward deployments in this area in a phased, coordinated and verified manner. The disengagement process was carried out over two days i.e. 04 and 05 August 2021. The troops of both sides are now in their respective permanent bases. All temporary structures and other allied infrastructure created in the area by both sides have been dismantled and mutually verified. The landform in the area has been restored by both sides to pre-stand off period. This agreement ensures that the LAC in this area will be strictly observed and respected by both sides, and that there is no unilateral change in status quo.

Quad Senior Officials Meeting.

Senior Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs of India, Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade of Australia, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and Department of State of the United States of America met by video conference on 12 August to continue their consultations. The Quad Foreign Ministers meeting in February was followed by the historic first Leaders’ Summit held in March 2021. The consultations provided an opportunity to exchange views on the wide-ranging impact of COVID-19 in the Indo-Pacific region, and the importance of collaborative efforts to contain the pandemic, ensure health security and a quick economic recovery. In this context they reviewed the progress of the Quad Vaccine initiative which was announced by the Leaders, with the objective of enhancing vaccine production and equitable access.
The Officials discussed issues of common interest and explored possibilities of collaboration in resilient supply chains, emerging and critical technologies, maritime security, cyber security, counter-terrorism, infrastructure and connectivity, higher education, climate change and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

Recalling their shared values and principles, the Officials reaffirmed commitment towards a free, open, prosperous and inclusive Indo-Pacific region based on respect for international law. They reiterated their firm support for ASEAN centrality, ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific and ASEAN-led mechanisms in the regional architecture.

Naval Exercises with foreign navies.

In pursuance of India’s ‘Act East’ Policy, Indian Naval Ships arrived at Muara, Brunei as part of their deployment to South East Asia on 09 Aug 21. During the stay at Muara, Brunei, the crew of both the ships will participate in various bilateral professional interactions with Royal Brunei Navy. The bilateral exercise would conclude with a Passage Exercise with Royal Brunei Navy at sea on 12 Aug 21.

INS Tabar as part of the ongoing Overseas Deployment, entered Port Stockholm on 30 Jul 21. This is the first visit of an Indian Navy Ship to Stockholm in nearly two decades. It proceeded and a paid a visit to Bergen, Norway from 05-08 Aug and commenced Exercise Konkan 2021 on 12-16 Aug 21 with HMS Westminster off Portsmouth.

The second edition of exercise Zair-Al-Bahr between the Indian Navy and Qatar Emiri Naval Force (QENF) was conducted from 09-14 Aug 21 in the Persian Gulf. The present edition of the exercise included a three day harbour phase followed by a two day sea phase.

Hizbu’llah claimed responsibility for rocket attacks towards Israel.

Hizbu’llah, on 06 August 2021, claimed responsibility for rockets fired targeting the Israeli posts in Shebaa farms at the Golan Heights, northern Israel. Around 20 rockets were fired from Lebanon. The Israel’s Iron Dome missile defence system intercepted 10 rockets, with six falling in open areas near Har Dov on the Lebanese border and remaining fell inside Lebanon. No civilian/military injuries or casualties were reported.

“Threat to global peace and security as the Islamic State is rising”, said the UN Secretary-General.

In a report released on 03 August 2021, the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General—Antonio Guterres said that the rising of Islamic State (IS), with its expansion in Africa and its focus on comeback to Iraq and Syria, is a threat to international peace and security.
“As pandemic-related restrictions gradually ease, there is an elevated near-term threat of IS-inspired attacks outside conflict zones by lone actors or small groups that have been radicalised, incited and possibly directly remotely online,” said S-G Guterres.

On 01 August 2021, third time in less than two weeks, the United States (US) military carried out airstrikes against al-Shabaab terrorists in Qeycad in Galmudug state. “The airstrikes destroyed a large al-Shabaab firing position engaging Danab and SNA (Somali National Army) forces as they approached,” read the statement released by the Information Ministry of Somalia.

Afghan forces eliminated 30 Pakistani AQIS terrorists in airstrikes.

On 07 August 2021, the Afghan Air Force (AAF) conducted airstrikes and killed 112 Taliban terrorists, including 30 Pakistani terrorists affiliated to al-Qa’ida in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), at the outskirts of Lashkargah city in Helmand province. The AQIS operates under Taliban protection from Kandahar, Helmand, and Nimroz provinces.

Taliban seized Kabul; Afghan President Ghani flee country.

On 15 August 2021, Taliban terrorists entered Kabul—the capital city of Afghanistan, after Afghan President Ashraf Ghani reportedly resigned as President and fled the country. “The former President of Afghanistan left Afghanistan, leaving the country in this difficult situation. God should hold him accountable”, said the Head of the Afghan National Reconciliation Council (ANRC)—Abdullah Abdullah. CTD arrested five terrorists of al-Qa’ida and TTP from Punjab province.

On 05 August 2021, Punjab police’s Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) arrested five terrorists of al-Qa’ida and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) during raids in Punjab province. Among five, three terrorists of al-Qa’ida—Muhammad Farhan, Muhammad Arshad, and Mazhar Abbas, were arrested from Lahore in Punjab province.

Jammu and Kashmir
NIA raided several locations in 15 districts of J&K in connection to JeI terror funding case.

On 09 August 2021, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), along with Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) carried out searches at five locations in Bandipora district in connection to Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) terror funding case. The searches were conducted at the premises of members of JeI. Various incriminating documents and electronic devices were seized during the searches.

Earlier, on 08 August 2021, the joint team of the NIA, J&K police, and CRPF, raided 56 locations in 14 districts (Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Anantnag, Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar, and Rajouri) of J&K in the same case.

The JeI members have been collecting funds domestically and internationally through donations particularly in the form of Zakat, Mowda and Bait-ul-Mal purportedly to further charity and other welfare activities but these funds are instead being used for violent activities. The funds raised by JeI are also being channelised to Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and other terrorist groups through well organised networks of JeI operatives.

Police arrested two ‘newly recruited’ HM terrorists from Kishtwar.

On 09 August 2021, police arrested two ‘newly recruited’ Hizb ul-Mujahideen (HM) terrorists—Yasir Hussain and Usman Qadir, from Kalaingassu area of Tander Dachhan in Kishtwar district of Jammu, in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Reportedly, both terrorists went missing on 05 August 2021. On 08 August, reliable inputs were received regarding their presence in the area of Tander Dacchan. Subsequently, police team conducted search operation and apprehended both terrorists. Arms and ammunition were recovered upon their possession.

NIA filed charge sheet against six LeM terrorists in a terror conspiracy case.

On 04 August 2021, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed charge sheet against six Lashkar-e-Mustafa (LeM) terrorists—Hidayat-ullah Malik, Baseerat ul-Ain, Jaan Mohammad Teeli, Mudabir Manzoor, Mustaq Alam, and Jawed Alam, in connection to a terror conspiracy case by LeM at behest of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) to carry out terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
Investigation has revealed that Hidayat-ullah Malik was the commander-in-chief of LeM—a newly floated off-shoot of JeM, and along with his associates, Malik was planning terrorist activities in various parts of India. The LeM was tactically formed to evade security forces and ease the international pressure on JeM after 2019 Pulwama terrorist attack.

“Between May 2018 and June 2021, 630 terrorists eliminated in J&K,” informed Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai.

On 04 August 2021, the Minister of State for Home Affairs (MoSHA)—Nityanand Rai informed the Rajya Sabha (the Upper House of the Indian Parliament), that between May 2018 and June 2021, security forces eliminated at least 630 terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). In same period, around 400 incidents of gun-battle between terrorists and security forces happened, and 85 security personnel attained Veergati. “The government adopted a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism, and measures are in place to strengthen the security apparatus, enforce strict laws against anti-national elements, and intensified Cordon and Search Operations (CaSO) to contain the challenges posed by terrorist organisations,” said Minister Rai.

Police arrested four LeT terrorists from different parts of the Valley.

On 02 August 2021, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) police cracked another module and arrested four Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists—Aamir Reyaz Lone from Baramulla district, Owais Ahmad Shaksaz from Anantnag district, Suhaib Muzaffar Qazi aka Tamil from Kulgam district, and Tariq Ahmad Dar from Pulwama district. The arrested terrorists were conspiring to carryout blasts in Southern Anantnag district and were actively engaged in training the youth of the area via online platforms to join LeT and Hizb ul-Mujahideen (HM).

Key woman Maoist surrendered in Odisha.

On 08 August 2021, a top woman Maoist—Kanti Mallick aka Anita of the KKBN division of the CPI (Maoist), surrendered before the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Kandhamal—Vinit Agarwal. Kanti joined the KKBN division in 2018 and had been involved in several Maoist activities. She was disillusioned by the anti-people activities of the Maoists and decided to surrender the arms, said SP Agarwal.

Police arrested a Maoist supporter from Odisha.

On 04 August 2021, police arrested a Maoist supporter—Duryodhan Bariha (40 years-old) of the Balangir-Bargarh-Mahasamund Division (BBMD), from Jhalbahal village in Nuapada district in Odisha. Duryodhan used to provide ration, medicines, shelter, and logistics support to the Maoists. He was involved in various acts of violence, including the murder of Trilochan Taria in 2019. Several booklets, and Mao posters were recovered from Duryodhan’s house upon his arrest.

NIA raided two locations in Karnataka and arrested IS suspect in ‘IS-Voice of Hind’ case.

In a joint operation with Karnataka police, on 06 August 2021, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials raided two locations in Bhatkal in Karnataka, and arrested key Islamic State (IS) suspect—Jufri Jawhar Damudi in connection to ‘Islamic State-Voice of Hind’ case. The case was registered on 29 June 2021, in connection with a conspiracy of IS to radicalise and recruit Muslim youth and wage jihad against India.
Jufri Jawhar Damudi was using pseudonym ‘Abu Hazir al-Badri’ for his active involvement in translation of ‘Voice of Hind’ to South Indian languages and its further dissemination. The ‘Voice of Hind’ is IS’s online magazine to disseminate the propaganda in cyberspace.

NIA searched five locations in J&K and Karnataka and arrested four IS operatives in ‘IS-Kerala module’ case.

On 04 August 2021, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), along with State police units of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and Karnataka, conducted simultaneous searches at five locations (three in J&K, one in Bengaluru, and one in Mangalore) in connection with Islamic State (IS)-Kerala module case.
The joint teams arrested four IS operatives—Obaid Hamid & Muzammil Hassan Bhat from J&K, Ammar Abdul Rahman from Mangalore, and Shankar Venkatesh Perumal from Bengaluru. All four were involved in raising funds and radicalising Muslim youth in India to join the IS. During searches, several digital devices, including laptops, mobile phones, Hard Disk Drives (HDDs), USB drives, SIM cards of different telecom service providers, and incriminating documents were seized.

Police recovered hand grenades, IED and Tiffin bomb near India-Pakistan border.

On 09 August 2021, the Punjab police recovered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), hand grenades, and other ammunition packed in bag from Dalike village, in Tarn Taran Tehsil of Amritsar district, located near the India-Pakistan International Border. According to police officials, the package, suspectedly, delivered via drone, contained five hand grenades, 100 9mm cartridges, along with a tiffin bomb, and three detonators. The IED was made of 2 kgs of RDX.

“A double-decker tiffin box in which full IED was fabricated, was also recovered from the site. The National Security Guard (NSG) team revealed that the tiffin bomb is a sophisticated form of IED. The role of pro-Khalistan group—Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) is under scanner,” said Punjab’s Director-General of Police (DGP)—Dinkar Gupta.

Pakistan government approved new cyber security policy.

As reported on 05 August 2021, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced a new cyber security policy, accompanying a cyber security agency to deal with Pakistan’s cyber threats. “The IT (Information Technology) ministry and all relevant public and private institutions will be provided all possible assistance and support to ensure that their data, services, ICT products and systems are in line with the requirements of cyber security,” said IT minister Syed Aminul Haq.

MHA helped 18 states to set-up cyber forensic labs.

Amid rising rate of cyber crimes across India, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) helped 18 states to set-up ‘state of the art’ cyber forensic-cum-training laboratories. These laboratories have helped the law enforcement agencies to crack thousands of cyber crime related incidents, including child pornography.
In 2019, the MHA provided a grant of ₹ 93.12 crore to all states and the Union Territories (UTs) under the Cyber Crime Prevention against Women and Children (CCPWC) scheme. The funds were utilised to set up such forensic-cum-training labs, recruitment of cyber consultants at junior level, and the capacity building to law enforcement personnel.

Black-hat hackers threatened to leak data of Intel and AMD.

Taiwan-based hardware company—Gigabyte has suffered a cyber-attack, where the black-hat hackers threatened to release more than 112 GB of confidential data of the Intel and AMD. According to report in The Record, the RansomExx ransomware gang has attacked Intel. The company was investigating the modus operandi of the attack.

Since the announcement of the Government to undertake corporatisation of OFB in May, 2020, the Government has held various discussions with the OFB employees’ Federations regarding the corporatisation of OFB under Chairmanship of Secretary (Defence Production). Their concerns and suggestions were noted. Their main concern about safeguarding the interests of the employees of OFB has been adequately addressed. It is pertinent to mention that Chief Labour Commissioner (Central) also held discussions with Government & OFB Federations as part of the conciliation process under the ID Act 1947. To enhance functional autonomy, efficiency and unleash new growth potential and innovation in Ordnance Factories, the Government has decided to convert the production units of Ordnance Factory Board into 07 Defence Public Sector Undertakings.

Indian Navy(IN) accepts first batch of two MH-60r Multi Role Helicopters (MRH)

The IN accepted the first two of its MH-60R Multi Role Helicopters (MRH) from US Navy in a ceremony held in San Diego on 16 Jul 21. The helicopters are manufactured by Lockheed Martin Corporation, USA and are all-weather helicopter designed to support multiple missions with state of the art avionics/ sensors. Twenty four of these helicopters are being procured under Foreign Military Sales from the US Government. The helicopters would also be modified with several India Unique Equipment and weapons.

Investment for Procurement of Indigenously Manufactured Defence Equipment

In line with Government of India’s initiative of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, it has been decided to earmark an amount of Rs 71,438.36 crore for domestic capital procurement out of the total allocation of Rs 1,11,463.21 crore for Capital Acquisition.

Capital procurement of defence equipment are undertaken from various domestic as well as foreign vendors, based on threat perception, operational challenges and technological changes and to keep the Armed Forces in a state of readiness. During last three financial years i.e.2018-19 to 2020-21, 102 contracts have been signed with Indian vendors for capital procurement of defence equipment such as aircrafts, missiles, tanks, bullet proof jackets, guns, navy vessels, radars, networks etc.

Sarang performs at MAKS air show in Russia

The Sarang Helicopter Display Team of the IAF performed for the first time at the MAKS International Air Show held at Zhukovsky International Airport, Russia. The air show is a biennial fixture and this year’s edition was scheduled from 20 July 2021 to 25 July 2021.This is the first occasion when the Sarang Team performed its four helicopter aerobatics display in Russia, with its ‘Made in India’ ‘Dhruv’ Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH). These HAL manufactured machines have hinge less rotors and are equipped with state-of-the-art avionics, which makes them extremely suitable for military aviation. The Sarang Team was formed in 2003 at Bangalore and its first international display was at the Asian Aerospace Airshow at Singapore in 2004.

MoD issues RFP for construction of six P-75(I) submarines for Indian Navy

Ministry of Defence (MoD) has issued Request of Proposal (RFP) for the first acquisition programme under the Strategic Partnership Model for construction of six AIP fitted Conventional Submarines named Project 75(India) [P-75(I)] for the Indian Navy. The RFP was issued to shortlisted Strategic Partners (SPs) or Indian Applicant Companies for the project viz, M/s Mazagaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and M/s Larsen &Tubro (L&T). The project cost is over Rs 40,000 crore.

Project-75(I) envisages indigenous construction of six modern conventional submarines (including associated shore support, Engineering Support Package, training and spares package) with contemporary equipment, weapons & sensors including Fuel-Cell based AIP (Air Independent Propulsion Plant), advanced torpedoes, modern missiles and state of the art countermeasure systems.

DRDO successfully flight-tests indigenously developed MPATGM for minimum range

DRDO successfully flight-tested indigenously developed low weight, fire and forget Man Portable Antitank Guided Missile (MPATGM) on July 21, 2021. The missile was launched from a man portable launcher integrated with thermal site and the target was mimicking a tank. The missile hit the target in direct attack mode and destroyed it with precision. The test has validated the minimum range successfully. All the mission objectives were met. The missile has already been successfully flight tested for the maximum range. The missile is incorporated with state-of-the-art Miniaturized Infrared Imaging Seeker along with advanced avionics. The test brings the development of indigenous third generation man portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile close to completion.

DRDO successfully flight-tests surface-to-air missile Akash-NG

DRDO successfully flight-tested the New Generation Akash Missile (Akash-NG), a surface-to-air Missile from Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the coast of Odisha on July 21, 2021. The flight trial was conducted from a land-based platform with all weapon system elements such as Multifunction Radar, Command, Control & Communication System and launcher participating in deployment configuration.

Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with Royal Navy

The maiden two day exercise between IN and the Royal Navy’s latest Aircraft Carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth included participation of CSG-21 comprising Type 23 Frigates and an Astute-class submarine in addition to the other surface combatants. IN was represented by its Ships and a submarine. Anti-Submarine Warfare capable Long Range Maritime Reconnaissance Aircraft P8I also participated in the exercise. With the presence of the CSG-21 in the Indian Ocean, the ongoing exercise has afforded excellent opportunity to engage over the entire spectrum of maritime operations including ASW, Anti-Air and Anti-Surface warfare. The exercise also witnessed the maiden participation of the F 35 B Lightning which operate from the deck of HMS Queen Elizabeth.

INS Tabar in Russia, INS Airavat in Indonesia and INS Talwar is participating in Exercise Cutlass Express 2021

INS Tabar arrived at St Petersburg 22 Jul 21 as part of a five-day goodwill visit to Russia and to participate in the 325th Navy Day celebrations of the Russian Navy. INS Airavat arrived at the Port of Jakarta, Indonesia on 24 Jul 2021, carrying COVID-19 relief supplies. The ship brought five Cryogenic containers containing 100 MT of Liquid Oxygen and 300 Concentrators to support Indonesia in its fight against the ongoing pandemic. INS Talwar is participating in the multi-national maritime exercise Cutlass Express 2021 (CE 21), being conducted from 26 Jul to 06 Aug 21 in Kenya.

COVID vaccination dramatically reduces infection finds AFMS study

On 16 Jan 2021, India launched its immunization program against COVID-19. Among the first recipients were 1.59 million Health Care Workers (HCWs) and Frontline Workers (FLWs) of the Indian Armed Forces, who were administered COVISHIELD (Astra Zeneca).Data of 1,595,630 individuals (mean age 27.6 years; 99% male) over 135 days was analysed. Till 30 May 21, 95.4% and 82.2% were partially and fully vaccinated. The number of breakthrough cases in the UV(Un Vaccinated), PV (Partially Vaccinated) and FV(Fully Vaccinated) were 10061, 1159 and 2512; while the deaths were 37, 16 and 7 respectively. Corrected VE was 91.8–94.9% against infections. The conclusion of the interim study of 1.59 million HCWs and FLWs of Indian Armed Forces showed a ∼93% reduction in COVID-19 breakthrough infections with COVISHIELD vaccination.

CAS visit to UAE

Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria, Chief of the Air Staff, embarked on an official goodwill visit to UAE. He will be visiting UAE on an invitation from Major General Ibrahim Nasser M. Al Alawi Cdr UAE Air Force and Air Defence (UAE AF & AD). IAF and UAE AF & AD have had significant professional interactions in the past few years and this visit will further strengthen the defence cooperation and Air Force level exchanges, as part of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two sides.

Army killed at least 20 Boko Haram terrorists in an attack in Far-North region.

On 24 July 2021, at least 20 Boko Haram terrorists were killed during an attack on Cameroon Army’s outpost in Far-North region. Next day, villagers found several bodies of terrorists in Belgafe—an Island in the region after Cameroon military deterred Boko Haram’s attack on its outpost. In the same attack, eight Cameroon military personnel were martyred, and 13 others wounded, said Cameroon Army spokesman—Colonel Didier Badjeck.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for rocket attacks near Presidential Palace in Kabul

In a statement circulated through one of its channel/group on Telegram application, Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for targeting Presidential Palace with at least three rockets on 20 July 2021 as President Ashraf Ghani and a group of leaders were gathered to offer Eid al-Adha prayers in the Presidential Garden. The rockets landed near the Presidential Palace. In early morning, the sound of incoming rockets heard over the Green Zone that houses Afghanistan Presidential Palace, and several Embassies, including the United States (US) Embassy in Kabul. No casualties were reported in the attack.

“Islamic State’s terrorists moving into Afghanistan,” claimed Russian Defence Minister Shoigu

On 28 July 2021, Russia’s Defence Minister—Sergei Shoigu warned about the deterioration of security situation in Afghanistan amid United States (US) troops’ withdrawal. “Islamic State (IS) terrorists were moving into Afghanistan from Syria, Libya, and several other countries. We can also see that these movements are seriously organised. In concern, Russia was training Tajik military personnel at Russian military universities and facilities affiliated with the military base it operates in Tajikistan,” said Defence Minister Shoigu.
“Moscow views Taliban gains in northern Afghanistan as having a security upside because the group is hostile to what Russia regards as more dangerous Islamist extremists,” said a senior Russian diplomat on basis of anonymity.

ISI persuading Taliban terrorists to target infrastructure developed by India in Afghanistan

Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has been persuading Taliban terrorists to target infrastructure developed and financed by India in war-torn country—Afghanistan. As reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan, India has invested over USD three billion. The ISI, reportedly, already send around 10,000 Pakistani terrorists to Afghanistan to assist Taliban in the violent takeover of Afghan territories from Afghan government’s control amid the United States (US) and allied forces withdrawal. On 16 July 2021, Afghanistan’s President—Ashraf Ghani informed during a Central and South Asia Connectivity Conference held in Tashkent in Uzbekistan, that around 10,000 jihadis have entered Afghanistan from Pakistan during last one month and had blamed Pakistan government for this terror migration.

Security forces eliminated two TRF terrorists in Srinagar

In a pre-dawn counter-terrorism (CT) operation on 16 July 2021, security forces killed two terrorists—Irfan Ahmad Sofi and Bilal Ahmad Bhat, of The Resistance Front (TRF) terror group, in Srinagar’s Alamdar Colony. “Acting on specific information, a joint Cordon and Search Operation (CaSO) was launched at Alamdar Colony in Danmar area of Srinagar district. Terrorists were given opportunities to surrender, however, they fired indiscriminately. Two terrorists of self-claimed TRF of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were killed,” said Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Vijay Kumar.

Security forces eliminated two LeT terrorists in Baramulla

On 23 July 2021, security forces eliminated two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists—Fayaz Ahmad War aka Rukana and Shaheen Ahmad Mir aka Shaheen Molvi, in a joint Cordon and Search Operation (CaSO) in Warpora village of Sopore in Baramulla district, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). NIA filed charge-sheet in HM Narco-terror case

On 30 July 2021, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a supplementary charge-sheet against Manpreet Singh aka Mann, before NIA Special Court in Mohali, Punjab, in connection with the arrest of Hilal Ahmad Shergojri and recovery of a truck along with ₹ 29 lakhs from his possession upon arrest. Hilal Ahmad was an Over-Ground Worker (OGW) of Hizbul-Mujahideen (HM) and a close associate of Riyaz Naikoo. Manpreet Singh is a narcotics trafficker and was in close contact with other terrorists for supply of weapons and channelizing the proceeds of sale of narcotics. During search around 130 live rounds of 9mm calibre of Pakistan-origin were recovered from Manpreet’s possession.

J&K Police shot down drone equipped with IED material in Jammu

On 23 July 2021, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) police shot down a Hexacopter (drone) equipped with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) weighing approximately 5 kgs near Akhnoor in Jammu district of J&K. “Police had received inputs that Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) was planning to drop a payload through a drone near Akhnoor. Acting swiftly, police team rushed to the area mentioned in the input and started surveillance. During mid-afternoon, police team spotted a drone and kept close watch on it. When it was about to drop the payload, police team shot it down and recovered the IED. The drone was assembled as the parts were made in China, Taiwan and Hongkong,” said the Additional Director-General of Police (ADGP) Mukesh Singh.

On 31 July 2021, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out searches at nine locations in Anantnag, Shopian, and Jammu districts of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and arrested a Lashkar-e-Mustafa (LeM) terrorist—Irfan Ahmed Dar. The case is related to the conspiracy of LeM on behest of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) to carry out terrorist activities in J&K.

NIA conducted searches at multiple locations in J&K connection to Bathindi IED recovery case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA), on 31 July 2021, with assistance of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel raided six locations in Shopian and Ramban districts of J&K in connection to 2021 Bathindi IED recovery case.

The case is related to recovery of 5kgs of Improvised Explosive Device (IED) from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist in Bathindi, Jammu on 27 June 2021. During the search operation at these locations, several digital devices, mobile phones, handwritten jihadi material, ID cards of al-Aqsa media and other incriminating material were recovered.

NIA conducted searches at multiple locations in Telangana in Dummugudem Explosives case

On 19 July 2021, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted searches at nine locations in Mahboob Nagar, Warangal, Jangaon, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Medchal districts in Telangana, in connection with Dummugudem Explosive case.
The case was registered against eight accused people including four Under-Ground Cadres (UGC) of CPI (Maoist), along with recovery of explosive materials including 400 electric detonators, 500 non-electric detonators, 400 gelatine sticks, and 549 meters of fuse wire from the possession of arrested UGCs—Muthu Nagaraju and KommarajulaKanuKaiah.

Police arrested five Maoists from Telangana

On 26 July 2021, Police arrested five Maoists from Kunrapalli forest area in Cherla Mandal in Bhadradri Kothagudem district in Telangana, while they were posting wall-posters related to the CPI (Maoist)’s martyrs’ week. Five wall-posters and 30 pamphlets bearing the CPI (Maoist) logo and name were seized from their possession, said a police official on the basis of anonymity. Police mounted a strict vigil in the forest fringe areas in view of the martyrs’ week slated to be observed from 28 July to 03 August 2021.

Police arrested ‘most wanted’ Maoist from Chhattisgarh
On 25 July 2021, Sukma Police arrested—Tiger Hunga, a Maoist for 21 years, during a search operation in the forests of Palodi in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh. Tiger Hunga was wanted by Chhattisgarh and Telangana police for killing 13 security personnel.

On 24 July 2021, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out searches at six locations in Thanjavur, Madurai, Theni, and Tirunelveli districts in Tamil Nadu, including at residence of an arrested accused—Abdullah aka Saravankumar and his associates. The case is related to incendiary messages on Facebook on 23 March 2021 and 25 March 2021, instigating people on religious grounds to wage war against India and establishment of Khilafat.

NIA arrested two LeM terrorists in connection with LeM conspiracy case

On 22 July 2021, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested two Lashkar-e-Mustafa (LeM) terrorists—Mohammad Arman Ali aka Arman Mansuri (20 years-old) and Mohammad Ehsanullah aka Guddu Ansari (23 years-old), in connection with a LeM conspiracy case registered in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Both terrorists were co-conspirators and were involved in transportation of two separate consignments of illegal arms/ammunition from Bihar to Mohali and Ambala.
Mohammad Arman Ali was arrested from Bihar, and Mohammad Ehsanullah was arrested from Jammu, J&K.

NIA filed a charge-sheet against two UNLF terrorists in connection with an attack on security forces in Manipur

On 22 July 2021, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed charge-sheet in the NIA Special Court, Manipur, against two United National Liberation Front (UNLF) terrorists—Lisham Ibosana Meitei aka Jojo aka Michael and Konsam Manithoi Singh, in connection with attack on security forces at Raj Bhavan Gate in Imphal. The NIA had re-registered the case on 05 March 2021 and took the investigation.

Russia opened case against WhatsApp for violating Russia’s Personal Data Legislation

Russia, on 30 July 2021, opened legal proceedings against Facebook’s WhatsApp for a failure to localise data of Russian users on Russian territory. A day earlier to the proceedings, on 29 July 2021, a Russian Court fined Alphabet Inc’s Google three million Roubles for violating terms of Russia’s Data Legislation and registered administrative proceedings against Facebook and Twitter for the same offence.
